Canadians Come Out in Droves During PokerStars Championship Panama

During the first rendition of PokerStars Championship Panama, Canadians traded in their toques for some swimming trunks as Canada was the highest represented nationality during the Main Event with 15 percent of the entries.

The $5,300 Main Event saw 366 entries across two starting flights. Two Canadians managed to reach the final table with Anthony Diotte and Harpreet Gill occupying two of the remaining nine seats. Diotte finished in sixth place for $65,520. Gill managed to make it to heads-up play, ultimately falling one spot short of the title in second place for $217,860.

Over the 11-day, 46-event festival, eight Canucks managed to take home victories while another six players finished in second.

The first of four DeepStacks Poker Tour stops in Canada just wrapped up at Grey Eagle Resort & Casino March 19, with Josh Wallace outlasting a field of 403 entries in the $1,100 Main Event across two starting flights to take home $81,861 along with a DSPT trophy.

This marks Wallace’s biggest live poker tournament score, topping his recent $78,000 win at the Winter Super Stack $1,500 Main Event.

DSPT comes back to Canada for DSPT Edmonton at Casino Yellowhead from March 31 to April 10.

The third event of the Station Poker Classic has just wrapped up, seeing a total of 189 entries buy in for $720+$100+80, creating a total prize pool of $136,080. The tournament paid 19 spots with a min-cash taking home $1,826. The winner would receive $36,300 and a coveted Station Poker Classic ring.

Along with every $720 in the prize pool there was a $100 bounty for eliminating a player, which made every all-in scenario more lucrative for the players. The remaining three players ended up making a deal: Chris Bowers would take home $26,000 and the title while Pak Chan and John Hashem received $24,456.

Event 2 at the Station Poker Classic wrapped up in the early morning of the following day as 169 players entered the $700 buy in No Limit Hold’em event. The prize pool was $106,470 with 17 spots receiving money back. A min-cash would give players $1,689 while the eventual champion would receive $28,574.

After taking approximately six hours and 45 minutes to get to the final table, it took another 10 hours to complete the tournament. When heads-up play began, Danny Lamb and Dominick French made a deal to each receive $22,500 and play for the remaining $1,813 and the ring.

Neither player wanted to give in with a heads-up match that lasted 2.5 hours on its own. In the end, Dominick French was victorious, collecting the ring and the extra $1,813 for a total of $24,313.

Fresh off his sixth-place finish in the Main Event of the DeepStacks Poker Tour at Grey Eagle Resort & Casino on Sunday, Thomas Taylor has now parlayed that into a win in the first event of the 2017 Station Poker Classic at Casino Regina. The $500 buy in event with 188 entries created a prize pool of $84,600 which paid 19 spots. Taylor collected $22,567 for his win along with a Station Poker Classic ring. Cody B was the runner-up, winning $14,357.

There's not anything new when it comes to the Global Poker Index rankings as Ari Engel is still atop the leaderboard of GPI Top Canadian for the 21st-straight week.

Engel also leap-frogged Daniel Dvoress for the 2017 Canadian Player of the Year race. Dvoress dropped from first to second in the POY race while being chased by Mike Leah and Kristen Bicknell. Bicknell managed to win an event at the PokerStars Championships Panama this past week and rose from sixth to fourth.

It was a great Sunday for “good player” as he topped the list of Canadian online players by winning the $2,600 partypoker Super High Roller for $51,698. Also cashing in the tournament was “WWWpartyCOM” who won $16,261 for a fourth-place finish.

“WWWpartyCOM” wasn’t satisfied with just that one cash, though, finishing as the runner-up of partypoker’s Heavyweight: The Title Fight for $42,000 as well. “FiveBetFold” also reached the final table, finishing ninth for $3,605.

It was a quiet day for Canadians on PokerStars for the Sunday majors but “GriffGolf13” managed to save the day for Canadians with a runner-up finish in the $215 Sunday Warmup, winning $41,500. “JGagMan” was the other Canadian to reach the final table, finishing in ninth for $3,624.
